How Many Calories do I Need to Eat to Lose Weight?

One of the very first questions all new dieters want to know is how many calories they are allowed to eat to meet their weight loss goals. And of course, this makes total sense, right? We have all been conditioned (and to a large degree it is true) to draw a straight line between our caloric intake and our expected weight gain or loss. Now, obviously there is a fair amount more to the equation than this! While a calorie, might be a calorie. there are other variables that factor into the equation in very real and powerful ways, most notably and universally agreed upon: Your activity level!

Remember, one pound of weight loss is created by a deficit of roughly 3,500 calories.

This is going to be the difference between the caloric input and output level, if you burn 3,500 extra calories in a day (you probably won't!) and all other things remain equal, guess what? You'll be one pound lighter for the effort. Again, this is simply just an illustrative example...there are many unique permutations and plans which account for the types of calories differently...but most hard core science will tell you, at the end of the day - it's just about the math. Calories in, vs. calories out as a measure of energy.

So if you want to be your own dietary chemist and figure out exactly how many calories you need to consume to lose weight, you simply need to "do the digits!" And when you are done, extrapolate the numbers out over the period of time you are planning on dieting, and you should have a rough allocation of your daily calorie intake. This is not the "sexy" way of dieting, of course...but it is the one the guys with the lab coats would have you follow! And while not the most exciting way to get started, it will provide the foundational guideline for many of you to set your initial targets - then you'll come and talk to us!
