  • Choose a diet that uses foods you like, and that consists of a decent variety. It should allow you to eat carbohydrates, proteins and some fats. Your body has evolved in using all these elements -- they wont harm you. The diet should let you eat 4 to 6 smaller meals a day, with snacks in between.

  • Eat low in fat, eat lots of fruits and vegetables, eat whole grains, avoid too much sugar, watch your salt intake and limit your consumption of alcohol.

  • Eat before and after exercising -- Eat at least 90 minutes before working out to fuel your body and to prevent indigestion. Eat afterwards to replace used energy.

  • Have breakfast -- Your body needs a kickstart in the morning to restart its metabolism -- don't deny it!

  • Always have nutritious snacks handy. Try to provide yourself with healthy alternatives to the wrong kinds of snacks, eat fruits, vegetable sticks, nuts, rice cakes and dried fruits.

  • Don't think of food as being "the enemy" -- When you work out regularly, you will start seeing it for what it is -- a source of energy. Ask yourself if what you are about to eat is nutritional and will give you energy. Or is it just empty calories?

  • Eat more often, but smaller portions. If you don't eat for a length of time, your metabolism will slow down.

  • If you really must be naughty and have that chocolate bar, have it after your workout. Your metabolism will be at its peak, and why not reward yourself?

  • Stay hydrated -- Drink 8 to 10 glasses of water each day. In stead of washing down a glass at a time, have a bottle of water handy and sip on it during the day.

  • Power snack before an upcoming meeting, or physical pursuit -- Stock up from the local health store with rice cakes, oats, rusks, sunflower bars, nuts and if you have a sweet tooth like me, yoghurt and honey!

Muscles use energy, even when they are not being used. This is good for weight loss because it is a nifty way to lose calories while doing nothing. Unless, of course, you are sitting there eating, in which case you are most likely gaining calories.

What they found was that skinny people tend to fidget a lot, they do things like shaking their leg while sitting. You probably remember someone like that from high school. Remember the guy that sat there shaking his leg all the time, he couldn't sit still!

Thus, he and other skinny people burn a lot more calories while sitting around. You could take advantage of this too!

Here are some ideas. Move around while sitting, fidget, change positions a lot. Actually shake your leg up and down, stretch frequently, pace. These are all calorie burning activities. At least you will use more calories then sitting there without moving at all.

You can also tense and relax the major muscle groups, this might even trigger a feeling of relaxation, almost like a massage would. What do I mean by major muscle groups? The upper arms and shoulders, abdominals, thigh and gluteal muscles, these are all muscles that you could tense and relax repeatedly. Since they are relatively large muscle groups, they will expend relatively more energy. This might even have a slight toning affect at the same time.

True, this alone is not going to solve the weight problem for you, but perhaps it can help. There are indeed many more things that go into weight loss such as drinking plenty of water, eating MORE frequently, working out, eating properly, getting enough protein and essential fats. These are all important and helpful components to losing weight.

That is the point. Weight loss is not some simple formula that you can apply. It is certainly not some fad diet. There is a lot too it. The more you know, the more you can apply your knowledge and make small adjustments during your day. The more knowledge that you have the closer to success you can bring yourself.

It would be helpful to get your hands on as much weight loss knowledge as you can. You don't have to rely on one source only. Weight Loss Guides - Why You Shouldn't Believe Everything You Read

One of the reasons many people have trouble losing weight is because they are given incorrect information. It's all around us. In fact, let me show you an example. I was reading a magazine once which said something like the following:

"For me to become slimmer, I need to use light weights and lift 10-15 reps".

This is another of the common faulty myths associated with fat loss training. This theory robs well intended gym goers like a bandit in the night for a few reasons.

1-Volume is too high and intensity is too low. We can presume that we already are doing more aerobic activity in addition to restricting calories using light weight and higher reps is asking to lose important muscle. While dieting we need to give our body any reason possible to hold onto the good muscle mass that we have. We can not maintain or even stimulate new growth by using predominately light weight.

2- Adaptation. Progressive change is the basement that our training efforts are built on. Results are typically measured in either increased reps or weight used. How were you training before you decided to lose weight? Probably with 10-15 reps correct? Our goal has since changed so our training needs to as well. We can alter our efforts by using new exercises but the quickest road to the results in through both exercise and rep range changes.

3- Less muscle recruited. By staying within the same rep ranges we actually use less muscle. A change in muscle is dictated by the type of muscle fiber recruited. Using higher repetitions will cause us to preferably recruit our smaller and slower muscle fibers.

Results come quicker no matter your goal when you recruit both muscle fibers types. By alternating lifting session between higher and lower rep ranges we can achieve fat loss quicker than imagined.
